Worst January Ever

OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration. Everywhere we’ve gone people have been grumbling and wondering what happened to summer. And now it’s officially the worst January in over thirty years. The weekend papers for Nelson and Wellington were all over the weather statistics, citing a relentless train of storm systems and less than ten sunny days; about half the norm.

Living closer to mother nature than the average landlubber, we’ve certainly felt it at times. Even in some of the more protected anchorages we’ve been subjected to 60 knot gusts that have tested our ground tackle and the moorings of adjacent boats.

But now it’s the first weekend of February with a public holiday on Monday and we’re anchored in a beautiful cove off Adele Island in the Abel Tasman National Park. The sun is out, the water is aquamarine and everyone is out playing in whatever watercraft they can bring to the party. Life is good.

  1. Hmmm … so y’all show up and it’s the worst January ever? Just thinkin’ lol. But glad February looks to be promising kinder weather.

  2. If it’s any consolation, January in CA has been wet and windy too. So we’re off to Sedona this week. Enjoy the park and the sun while you have it.

  3. Indeed January has been wet and windy here at home. And February is starting out just as W&W. You need your sea boots to go to the wine cellar.

Wishing for a better Feb. for you all.

  4. Yup… it has been very unsettled and stormy! Just makes you enjoy the good windows even more than usual! Welcome to Purau Bay! ?
